Megan Conner, Runner and Personal Trainer

Featured on the cover of the latest issue of Nashville Fit Magazine is Megan Conner, a woman of MANY talents – and she’s an Eat Well ambassador too! After graduating from Baylor University with a degree in theater, Megan moved to New York City to pursue her dream of acting. But five days after moving, she walked into one of NYC’s premier fitness clubs and landed a job as a personal trainer. From there she went on to teach and manage fitness programs at several other elite fitness centers in the city.

If that wasn’t enough, in 2006 Megan moved to Nashville to pursue another passion of hers: music. But that didn’t stop her love of everything fitness. She’s trained at Takes 2 Fitness, Barry’s Bootcamp, and several other gyms around the city. Oh yeah, and she also runs marathons.

Megan is a firm believer in the huge impact healthy eating and fitness can make. “I have seen so many lives changed through exercise and by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. To have the opportunity to be a part of this impactful industry has truly been one of the most amazing and important things that I have done in my life thus far.”

If you Google “how to lose weight,” one of the most common pieces of advice that you’ll come across is to avoid snacking at all costs. But let’s take a step back: what they’re really saying is that MINDLESS eating will lead to packing on pounds.

Create Your Very Own DIY Wellness Plan For 2018

I have a confession: I absolutely hate when people say “new year, new me!” — mostly because it makes me think that you need to be a totally new person in order to have a better year than the last.

Although, I have another confession: I love resolutions. I think the idea of seizing the moment to better yourself and your life is incredibly brave and courageous. Whether it’s when the new year kicks off or whenever just “feels right,” taking that step to make a positive, healthy change is definitely something to be celebrated.

This year, my own personal resolution is to be more intentional with my overall well being. From what I eat to my activity levels to mental self-care, I’m striving to find more balance in my overall wellness to help create a happier, healthier me. And while the goal itself is exciting and I couldn’t be more pumped about it, it can be a little daunting to figure out how to actually get there… So, I’m making a plan to make sure I stick to my resolution and make this my best year yet.

2018 DIY WELLNESS PLAN


Step One: Set Your Goals
If you’re even considering creating your own wellness plan, you probably already have a goal in mind; but this is where it gets a little more focused.

Use the exercise below to set up 1 month, 3 month, and 6 month goals in each main area of wellness. Setting goals in shorter time frames like this helps you keep your progress manageable.

Don’t forget to increase your goal a little bit every 3 months!

  • Activity

Step Two: Identify The Essentials
Now that you’ve set manageable goals for yourself (and hopefully you’re starting to get excited!), it’s time to figure out what you’ll need to reach those goals. Use the exercise below to identify your goal-crushing essentials.

  • Activity

      Example: To reach my goal of running a 10k in 6 months, I will need an awesome pair of running shoes from Fleet Feet Nashville and fellow runners to help challenge me, like the East Nasty Running Club.

  • Self-Care

      Example: To reach my goal of getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night for at least 3 nights per week, I will set calendar reminders on my phone and track my sleep using my iPhone’s Bedtime app.


Step Three: Create An Accountability System
Let’s be honest: all of the planning in the world still doesn’t mean you’re 100% going to crush your goals. That’s where your accountability system comes in. For this step, pick a person or a particular method to help you check-in with yourself and your progress to keep you on track to reaching your goals.

No exercise here; this one has to be whatever works best for you. Here are a few ideas, to help you get started:

  • Post your goals on Instagram and commit to sharing regular daily or weekly updates about your progress
  • Share your goals with your best friend and ask them to check in with you every 3-5 days about how you’re doing
  • Use a goal tracking app on your phone
  • Create your own DIY written check-in system for yourself; write a sentence (or a few!) every day about what you did to actively progress in your journey to reach your goals and how it made you feel


Step Four: Reward Yourself!
While accomplishing your goal is a reward in itself, giving yourself a little extra incentive never hurts! Use the exercise below to determine a reward for reaching your goals at every benchmark, with the biggest reward set for the 6 month mark.

  • When I reach my 1-month nutrition, activity, and self-care goals, I will reward myself with ____________________.
    (Example: When I reach my 1 month nutrition, activity, and self-care goals, I will reward myself with a pair of concert tickets!)

3 Last-Minute Healthy New Year Resolutions

2018 has been in full swing for a few days now, and undoubtedly, a lot of resolutions have already failed. Whether it was New Years Day brunch or the large iced vanilla latte and pastry you grabbed rolling back into work the day after, you are not alone if your resolution to be a healthier you failed as soon as it began.

Nevertheless, my favorite thing about a new year rolling around is that the whole month of January basically feels like a fresh start – and it’s never too late to commit to making a few more manageable healthier choices that are not only easy to stick to for longer than a week, but can lead to a whole year of a healthier, happier you.

Ready for a change? These are 3 of my favorite healthy choices that you can easily make in the new year to help you kickstart your commitment to being healthier and happier in 2018. Give them a try and let us know what you think!

  1. Reset your digestive system + fall in love with natural food.
    My belief that diets don’t work comes from personal experience. I’ve tried every diet under the sun and let me tell you something… They don’t work, and it’s because they’re diets – not lifestyle changes. What actually works? Changing your habits. Processed, sugary food is extremely addicting, making dieting and changing your habits harder than it should be. One of the quickest ways to break that addiction and force yourself to develop healthier habits is by resetting your digestive system. Rid your body of toxins, reintroduce fresh, natural food, and let your body tell you what it really wants and doesn’t want.

    My personal recommendation: give Whole30 a try! It broke my soda and sugar addiction, taught me more about healthy food than I could have imagined, and helped me develop a healthy lifestyle leading to losing 65 lbs in less than a year.   2. Break up with processed food.
    Don’t get me wrong; I love a salty, greasy, crunchy bag of potato chips as much as the next person. Unfortunately, my body feels differently – and your body probably feels the same way too. Eating processed food leads to a whole slew of dangerous health problems like obesity, chronic fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. Scared yet? You should be.

    If you eat processed food regularly, I won’t lie: breaking up with it will be tough. While Whole30 is one of the best ways to detox and kick the habit, you can also start by cutting out one processed item a day and replacing it with natural, whole foods. My favorite healthy food hack: avoid eating anything that has ingredients you can’t pronounce or easily find at Whole Foods or Turnip Truck.

  3. Cut out sugary drinks.
    One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my health journey is how sugary drinks can totally destroy your body, even if you eat healthy food and exercise regularly. While it’s a tough habit to kick (sugar addiction is real, y’all) because of how addicting sugar is, there are tons of healthier options to replace your favorite sugar drink. My favorites: Everly and La Croix.

    Replacing my afternoon soda with Everly has helped me maintain my blood sugar levels and avoid the inevitable post-soda sugar crash. Plus, it’s created with all natural ingredients AND it’s local company. You can even add one to your next Eat Well order here! And if you need a daily fizz fix like I do, La Croix is the way to go. Why Committing To Happiness Is The Best Resolution You Can Make In 2018

We’re sick of failed resolutions. Let’s shift our mindset and commit to the things that make us happy in 2018.

No more kicking off the new year by pinpointing what’s wrong with our lives and our bodies. No more deciding that a number on a scale is the only thing that will make this year better than the last. It’s time to shift our outlook on typical New Year’s resolutions!

We’ve all been there: starry-eyed on New Year’s day with a long list of things we want – scratch that – we KNOW we’ll change this year, only to consider our feats a failure months down the line. While the underlying themes of bettering yourself and bettering your health are worthwhile, setting unrealistic expectations about changing the “negatives” in our lives can leave us worse off than we were on December 31st.

But what if instead of trying to fix everything wrong in our lives, we used January 1st as an opportunity to shift our mindset? What if in 2018 we decided to commit to what makes us the happiest, instead of focusing on the things we want to change? This year, we’re ditching the arbitrary benchmarks and making a pledge to spend more time on the things that make us happy, and we want you to join us.

Is your normal resolution to work out every day? Try committing to being active in a way that is fun and makes you feel good, rather than focusing your imperfections and changing the way you look. Looking to free up your schedule and stress less? Commit to treating yourself to more time-saving indulgences, like meal delivery, to free you up for more “me time.” By zeroing in on the good things, the negatives in our lives will lose priority and weight.

In 2018, we’re giving you one mission: commit to what makes you happy. We’re challenging you to focus less on the things you want to change, and more on what makes you happy.

No matter how poor the child’s family, their religion, or their race, the doors to St. Jude are always open. Since 1962, they’ve helped improve the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20% to 80%! St. Jude is leading the way that the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

In addition to the world class research conducted at St. Jude, all donations make it possible for no family to ever receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all they should worry about is helping their child live. When Nancy Gianni gave birth to GiGi, she made a promise to change the way the world looked at a person with Down syndrome. While sitting in a support group meeting for new parents of children with Down syndrome, she wondered why there wasn’t a place where families could go for resources and networking, and where kids and adults with Down syndrome could be the leaders. This is how GiGi’s Playhouse was born, as a place where families and individuals with Down syndrome can celebrate the diagnosis and work toward global acceptance.

Down syndrome is the largest chromosomal disability in the United States, yet it is the least funded. GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center offers free therapeutic and educational programming for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, empowering them by maximizing opportunities for daily achievement and lasting acceptance. Everything they do is to help show the world what individuals with Down syndrome are capable of achieving as students, co-workers, volunteers, friends, and valued members of their communities!

It’s 2017 and if you didn’t know already, women are awesome. Play Like a Girl has known this all along, and are committed to helping girls give new meaning to doing anything “like a girl.” Through programs like after-school clubs and pop-up play days, they’re getting middle school girls involved in athletics and activities to get them moving and their confidence soaring. Their philosophy is simple: the influence of strong, positive female role models gets girls everywhere off of the sidelines and into the game – winning.

The grassroots start-up founded by Dr. Kimberly S. Clay in 2004 has grown into a national nonprofit dedicated to reaching underserved girls through programs, community outreach, live events, and an online community. Reaching over 10,000 people annually, Play Like a Girl is helping girls everywhere unleash their awesome.

Everything Play Like a Girl does focuses on three main goals: building confidence, developing healthy behavior, and improving academic and leadership skills, setting girls on a path for lifelong success. We’re Kicking Off The Season Of Giving With Open Table Nashville!

The holiday season is undoubtedly one of the best times of the year. There’s something very satisfying about being able to look back over the year behind us while also preparing for a new year and new possibilities. It’s a time to reflect on what we’re thankful for and to make plans for how we can pay it forward to others who may need something to feel thankful for. We’ve just passed our one year anniversary here at Eat Well, and are taking this holiday season to give back to the Nashville community that has given us so much!

This week, we’re partnering with Open Table Nashville! $1 from every Chicken Bacon Ranch Stuffed Sweet Potato ordered now through November 17th will be donated to help Open Table in their mission of bettering our community through homeless outreach, education and advocacy.

If we could describe Open Table Nashville in one word, it would be “community.” When its founders made a commitment to the displaced residents of Nashville’s “Tent City” after heavy flooding in 2010, they weren’t on a mission to start a non-profit organization. When the flood waters receded and temporary shelters closed, city officials condemned “Tent City” without providing adequate alternatives for its former residents. The founders of Open Table Nashville began organizing volunteers, collecting donations, and finding solutions for the struggling former “Tent City” residents.

“We’re all motivated by our faith and that to us, an open table means a place where everyone is welcome.”

 

Through tough times and long hours, Open Table Nashville was born into a homeless outreach organization that disrupts cycles of poverty and makes sure that everyone has a voice. “When people ask about the name ‘Open Table Nashville,’” says Director and Co-founder Ingrid McIntyre, “they ask if it’s about a ‘food thing.’ I tell them that we’re all motivated by our faith and that to us, an open table means a place where everyone is welcome. The table is never too full and there’s always an open seat. I guess we could have called it ‘Available Chair,’ but that didn’t have the same ring.”

Co-founder Lindsey Krinks adds, “For us, an open table signifies fellowship, community, and radical inclusion. In other words, we’re not here just to make sure our friends on the streets get crumbs from the table. That is no more than charity. We’re here to make sure our friends have a place at the table, and that is about justice.”
